2002 TECHNOLOGY NEEDS ASSESSMENT

II. For each of the eight Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel listed below, indicate your level of competence. IMPORTANT: The eight Technology Standards for Instructional Personnel are mandated by the Code of Virginia but the Sample Indicators are not. They are simply to give the viewer an idea of the skills associated with each standard and should not be considered as a required nor exhaustive list of skills appropriate for the standard.

1. Instructional personnel shall be able to demonstrate effective use of a computer system and utilize computer software.

SAMPLE INDICATORS:
  • Turn computer on and shut it down properly
  • As required by your networking system, log in properly
  • Launch software programs such as Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, etc.
  • Save/retrieve files to/from a specified location on the computer's hard drive and/or a selected network drive
  • Save/retrieve files to/from a floppy disk or other removable media
  • Select a printer and print a document to a specified printer
  • Organize files by creating folders in a specified location
  • Delete a selected file from the computer's hard drive. selected network drive, floppy disk, or other removable media

I can comfortably demonstrate this standard. I do not need additional training to achieve it.

2. Instructional personnel shall be able to apply knowledge of terms associated with educational computing and technology.

SAMPLE INDICATORS Being able to define terms such as:
  • Terms associated with computer operation (Operating System, point, click, drag, open, close, etc.)
  • Temporary, Permanent, and Removable storage (RAM, hard drive, floppy disk, zip disk, CD, etc.)
  • Hardware (monitor, keyboard, disk drive, CD drive, mouse, PDA, graphing calculator, etc.)
  • Peripheral devices (printer: laser, dot matrix, inkjet, scanner, digital camera, projection systems, probes)
  • Internet terms (browser, URL, search engine, e-mail, etc.)
  • Network-related terms (Ethernet, file server, local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), IP address, etc.)

3. Instructional personnel shall be able to apply computer productivity tools for professional use.

SAMPLE INDICATORS:
  • Create and edit a word processing document, professional in appearance and free from typing and spelling errors
  • Enhance a word processing document by adding clip art or images from a digital camera, scanner and/or the Internet.
  • Edit the data in a given spreadsheet
  • Create a spreadsheet that incorporates simple functions such as sums or averages
  • Locate and edit information in a given database such as a student information system
  • Create a database file that stores information that may be sorted and searched (e.g. student information, classroom library list, classroom equipment inventory)
  • Use gradebook software to calculate and display student grades

4. Instructional personnel shall be able to use electronic technologies to access and exchange information.

SAMPLE INDICATORS:
  • Send a message and reply to a received message using e-mail
  • Send a file to someone via an e-mail attachment
  • Download, locate, and view a file received as an attachment
  • Launch an Internet browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) and go to a specified site (e.g. http://www.pen.k12.va.us or http://www.state.va.us )
  • Navigate and locate resources found on a web site
  • Use an Internet search site (e.g. Yahoo) to find appropriate classroom information
  • Create and use a Bookmark (using Netscape) or Favorites (using Internet Explorer)
  • Download and view a PDF file from the Internet or e-mail attachment

5. Instructional personnel shall be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and use appropriate instructional hardware and software to support Virginia's Standards of Learning and other instructional objectives.

SAMPLE INDICATORS:
  • Select appropriate hardware useful in supporting the Standards of Learning
  • Use searching techniques to locate information on the Internet
  • Evaluate web sites appropriate for student use
  • Select and use various instructional software which supports the Standards of Learning
  • Use the school's automated library media center to locate resources in the school library

6. Instructional personnel shall be able to use educational technologies for data collection, information management, problem solving, decision making, communication, and presentation within the curriculum.

SAMPLE INDICATORS:
  • Create and present lessons with software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, AppleWorks slide show, or iMovie
  • Create and use in an instructional setting a chart or graph using data entered in a Microsoft Excel worksheet or AppleWorks spreadsheet
  • Locate, select, and sort data from a database such as the school student information system and use this data to make decisions
  • Create and post a web page in order to communicate with students and/or parents
  • Use technology tools including, but not limited to, digital cameras, scanners, and large-group presentation devices as a part of instruction

7. Instructional personnel shall be able to plan and implement lessons and strategies that integrate technology to meet the diverse needs of learners in a variety of educational settings.

INDICATORS:
  • Design and present lessons integrating the use of application software appropriate for use in a computer lab setting and in the one-computer classroom
  • Design and present lessons integrating the use of instructional software appropriate for use in a computer lab setting and in the one-computer classroom
  • Design and present lessons integrating the use of the Internet appropriate for use in a computer lab setting and in the one-computer classroom
  • Utilize adaptive technology resources as teaching assignments dictate

8. Instructional personnel shall demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal issues relating to the use of technology.

INDICATORS--understanding and abiding by these:
  • The School Division's Acceptable Use Policy
  • Copyright and Fair Use laws
  • The responsible use of technology, including the importance of password security
