ART HAPPENINGS AT SPOTSWOOD HIGH SCHOOL GETTING “FIRED UP.”

Spotswood Art and Chemistry students got fired up over their pottery creations at Bridgewater College on November 2nd and 9th. About 100 Spotswood art and chemistry students traveled to Bridgewater College to hear Bridgewater art professor Michael Hough demonstrate the Japanese art of “raku” pottery firing and Bridgewater chemistry professor Kenneth Overway and his college senior chemistry students explain the oxidation process that occurs during raku firing. Spotswood art and chemistry students linked up to participate in the cross-curriculum adventure. Spotswood chemistry teacher Mrs. Stone and art teacher Mrs. Rosengarth coordinated the field trips and workshops. They received a grant for the cross-curriculum from Rockingham Educational Foundation, Inc. Special thanks to Dick Meyers Automotive who sponsored the grant. Art teacher Mrs. Floyd and student art teacher Ms. Rodgers participated, too. Thanks to photojournalism student Kathryn Wendelken for documenting the event.

SPOTSWOOD’S ART GOES GLOBAL

As Spotswood Art II students completed their curriculum on Asian art, Chinese artist Goulin Shen from Fudan University in Shanghai, China treated them to digital images of Chinese calligraphy and ceramic Chinaware. Via the Internet from Shanghai, Mr. Shen sent photographs of artwork created by him and his wife. In kind, Spotswood art students in December will share with the Shen’s their newly-created pieces of Asian art. Mr. Chen was awarded a 2006-07 Fox International Fellowship by Yale University’s MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and was researching U.S. Congressional images of China at Yale University. Spotswood’s fortunate connection to Mr. Shen happened through Mrs. Rosengarth’s sister who lives in Connecticut near Yale University.

How the Art Department Evaluates: Students will be responsible for learning vocabulary terms, procedures and processes, and the safe use of materials and tools. Written assignments, reports, critiques, and quizzes/tests will be incorporated into units. Project evaluations will be based on craftsmanship, effort, following directions, and meeting deadlines. Students are required to submit one piece of artwork to be displayed in a student art show that will coincide with the SHS musical. Advanced Art students will be required to display artwork in art shows periodically throughout the year.
