Suggestions for Success from College Students with Disabilities
College Students Suggested:
- Using interactive note-taking
- Using flash cards
- Treating a school day like a work day - work 8-5 or 8-6
- Asking for help and set up a plan with Disability Services EARLY
- Visiting the Disability Services office when you are trying to decide and visiting colleges (One student used resource time to research who to contact for Disability Services before he visited colleges)
- Checking the ETS website early for information on accommodations for SAT / ACT testing – there is a brochure from ETS to help plan
- Helping now for later
- Learn how to structure your time
- More accepting of disability and how to work with it
- Disability awareness
- Ex. Your reading disability might cause you to need to take 2-5x as long to read a passage – plan for that
- Staying prepared – DON’T CRAM!
