Wampler School

The Wampler School was located about two miles north of Mayland in Plains District on the road leading to New Market (currently Route 619-Wampler Road). The school was located on the west side of the road a short distance north of the old Wampler cemetery and is indicated as Wampler School #10 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The land for the school was deeded to the Plains District School Board on November 22, 1871 by Martin Wampler and wife, making this school one of the earliest schools built after the beginnings of the public school system. In an article in the October 21, 1954 edition of the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record, Mr. Henry Holsinger writes his recollections of the Wampler School. He lists a number of teachers but does not indicate the specific dates that they taught at the Wampler School. Some dates have been determined by examination of teacher records. The Wampler School was closed in 1906 when it was consolidated with the Newdale school into the new Concord School, located just north of St. Paul's Church. Mr. Holsinger indicated that the Wampler School burned some years after the school closed.
