Union School (Ashby)

The Union School in Ashby district was located about one mile northwest of Cross Keys at the intersection of the Cross Keys Road and the Friedens Church Road. This school was a successor to the earlier Cross Keys school which was located east of Cross Keys across from Union Church. The Cross Keys school had been closed when the Victory Hill school opened early in 1909. This school was also known in the community as the Flick Hill school. By 1911, population growth justified a new school at Cross Keys and land was purchased from John Hinkel and wife on July 15, 1911. The old Hedrick school building, which had been closed several years earlier, was moved to the site and became the new Union School. This was a one-room school. By 1915, population growth justified the construction of an additional room and Union became a two-teacher school for the remainder of its existence. The Union school was closed in 1933.
