The Mountain Dale School was located on the Mountain Road (currently Route 613) about one-half mile north of Cootes Store on the east side of the road. The date of construction of the school is unknown but it is shown as Plains District School #26 on Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The school is also referred to in Plains District school records as the "Good Hope" school. When the Cootes Store school opened in October of 1913, the Mountain Dale School was closed and the teacher who had been assigned to Mountain Dale, William A. Flick, was assigned to the Cootes Store school.
