Locust Grove (Gordons)

The Locust Grove School was located west of Timberville near Honeyville. It was known locally as Gordons school since the land was deeded to the school board by the Gordon family. The school is noted as School #34 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The early teachers at Locust Grove are unknown. The school was closed in 1911 when new schools were built at Orebaugh and Mechanicsville. The patrons of the Locust Grove school protested the closing of their school and even sought an injunction from the court to prevent its closing. However, the courts decided that school closing was the prerogative of the school board and refused to interfere. At their October 8, 1912 meeting, the Plains District School Board voted to sell the Locust Grove school to the highest bidder. Teachers known to have taught at Locust Grove are:

1908-09 Lee May

1909-10 Josephine Kline

1910-11 Violet Hefner (Year finished by Gladys Berlin)
