Hedrick's School was located in Ashby District on the Port
Republic Road south of Peach Grove. The school is noted but not named
in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. It was at the intersection
of the Port Republic Road and the Swift Run Gap Road (currently Route
704). The school was built in 1870 as a private (subscription) school
and was incorporated into the public school system in 1872. The
teachers at Hedrick's School are not known.
In 1899 a new schoolhouse was built at the same location. This school
served at this location until 1908 when it was consolidated into the
new Peach Grove School. In September of 1911, the Hedrick School
building was torn down and rebuilt near Cross Keys and became the
Union School. A year later, the lot was sold to George Huffman for
$10.
