The Greenmount school was located near Greenmount Church in the central part of Linville District. On November 15, 1875, land for the school at the intersection of Greenmount Road (772) and the old Bowman's Mill Road (910) about three miles north of Harrisonburg was deeded to the Linville District school trustees by Jacob Wenger and wife. A one-room frame building was constructed on this site. In 1897, the old frame building was torn down and a two-room schoolhouse was constructed on the same property. The two-room school had one room on the lower floor with a stairway leading to a second room on the upper floor. Additional land for the school was deeded to the Linville District school trustees on November 22, 1912 by Samuel Garber and wife. The Greenmount school served the community until 1932 when it was closed and the students transported to Linville-Edom. By 1928, the school population had declined to the point that Greenmount was reduced to a one-teacher school. The Greenmount building still stands and is now a private home.
