The Glass School was located on the Mountain Valley Road about one
mile south of Cootes Store. The exact date of construction of the
school is unknown but the school is listed as Glass School #23 on
Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. A picture that appeared in
the Shenandoah Valley of New Market in 1958 identified a number of
students and the teacher at the Glass School in 1890. The teacher is
identified as Prof. Newton Smith. The school was located on property
identified as belonging to J. M. Glass who apparently deeded the land
to the Plains District School Board for use as a school.
Teachers known to have taught at the Glass School:
1890-91 Newton Smith
1908-09 Annie W. Good
1909-11 (two sessions) Callie Bowman
1911-12 Lucie Whetzel
1912-13 Maud Swank
When the new school at Cootes Store opened in October of 1913, Annie
L. Bowman, who had previously been contracted to teach at the Glass
School, was transferred to the new Cootes Store School and the Glass
School was closed.
