The Daphna School was located south of Broadway in Plains District. The Daphna school was a two-room school built in 1905 east of the railroad depot. It was built to replace the old Shirkey school. The building was not only used as a school but also as a town hall. Many literary programs, singings, debates and public meetings were held in what came to be known as Cowans Hall or Daphna Hall. The land for the school was not deeded to the Plains District school trustees until January 22, 1917 when a deed was recorded by F. M. Stinespring for the one-acre lot where the school was located.
