Cross Keys School

The Cross Keys school was a one-room school located on the opposite side of the road from the Cross Keys (Union) church (presently Cross Keys-Mill Creek Ruritan Hall) and adjoining the church cemetery. The school is indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County as School #10. The school was one of the earliest post civil-war schools in Rockingham, being constructed in 1871. The Cross Keys school possibly started out as a private or church-sponsored school incorporated into the public school system. The early teachers at Cross Keys are unknown. When the Victory Hill school on the Port Republic Road was opened early in 1909, the Cross Keys school was closed. The school building and lot was sold to J. W. Moyerhoeffer on February 6, 1909 for the sum of $52.
