The Cedar Center School was located near Amberly in Central
District. The school was located on the east side of the road leading
north from the Singers Glen Road toward Green Hill. (currently Route
761). The date of construction of the original school is unknown but
it is indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County as the
Cedar Grove School. It is unknown whether this is the original name
for the school or whether the atlas was in error. All school records
indicate that it was called Cedar Center School as early as 1894. The
name could possibly have been changed to distinguish this school from
another Cedar Grove School in the eastern part of Central District.
The school was a one-room frame building. On August 1, 1896, land was
deeded to the Central District School Board by Sarah J. Hinegardner
and husband on the west side of the road opposite the original school
and a new school was built. This school served as a school until 1934
when the Cedar Center school was closed and the students transported
to Mount Clinton. The building has been converted into a home and is
currently (1997) the residence of Courtney and Nadine Dove.
