The Capon Run School was located on the east side of the road from
Broadway to Mathias (currently State Route 259) near the West
Virginia line. (at Highland Retreat). It is shown as school #29 on
Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The date of construction of
the first school is unknown but it is listed in Plains District
School Board minutes of 1882 and mentioned by Superintendent George
Hulvey in his description of a visit to the schools of northwest
Rockingham County in November of 1886. He indicates that Siram May
was the teacher at Capon Run.
In 1910 a new school was constructed on land deeded to the Plains
District School Board by Benjamin Moyers and wife (deed dated October
20, 1910) This school served the area until the end of the 1934-35
school session.
