Caplinger School

The Caplinger school was a one-room school located at Criders in northwest Rockingham County. The school is noted as School #32 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The school was opened for the 1881-82 school session. According to the minutes of the Plains District School Board of August 13, 1881, " appropriations were made for the purpose of building a new Caplinger schoolhouse for a cost of $175." The only known early teacher at the school was J. Luther Wittig, who taught at "Caplinger's" school during the 1886-87 school session. In an article for the Rockingham Register in the fall of 1886, Superintendent George Hulvey recorded his visit to the schools of northwest Rockingham County and made this observation, "Again we leave the warm stove and start for Caplinger's schoolhouse, No. 32. J. Luther Wittig teaches here and his pupils seem to be more advanced than those of some other schools". In 1919, the Caplinger school was replaced by a two-room structure, built at a cost of $2300 by John F. Wagner. The land for the new school was deeded to the Plains District School Board by William H. Yankey on August 28, 1918. The new building was completed in July of 1919.
