Broadway Colored School

Very little is known about this small one-room colored school. According to the Plains District School Board minutes of September 9, 1882, land was purchased from John H. Thomas for a colored schoolhouse at a cost of $115. The school is not shown in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County (Broadway inset map), but the property of John H. Thomas is shown in the northwest corner or Broadway, to the west of the Brock's Gap road bridge. Teachers at the school are unknown and the school closed prior to 1908 since it is not listed in Plains District School Board minutes of that year.
