Briery Branch School

 

The first school at Briery Branch was a one-room frame building located at the junction of the Ottobine and Brocks Gap-Mt. Solon Road in the western part of Ashby District. This school was built in 1884 and is indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. Teachers at this one-room school are unknown. In 1908, a new consolidated school was built at Briery Branch and offered a one and two year high school program. This was one of the early consolidated schools in Rockingham County. The one-room school was sold to the trustees of the Briery Branch Church of the Brethren on December 26, 1908 for $128. The school at Briery Branch served the community until 1958 when it was consolidated with Clover Hill to form the new Ottobine school. Teachers known to have taught at Briery Branch are:
