The Biedler School was located on the Mountain Road (currently
Route 620) east of Tenth Legion and a short distance south of Endless
Caverns. The land for the school was deeded to the Plains District
School Board by Emmanuel Driver on July 20, 1878 for a sum of $10 for
the purpose of the construction of a school. The first teacher of
record at the Biedler School was T. A. Long who was contracted for
the 1880-81 school session to teach a five-month term for $23 per
month. The school is indicated on Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham
County as Massanutten School #4 although records indicate that it was
always called Beidler School. It was also known locally as the Arkton
or Roark School. In 1923 a one-room addition was added at a cost of
$800. Construction records indicate that the labor and additional
materials were provided by the patrons of the school. During the
1940's the school had some difficulty maintaining a legal average and
proposals were made to close the school. However, the school was
operated until 1949 when the students were transported to Tenth
Legion.
