The Bethany School was one of a few schools that were never owned
by the county but operated out of a rented facility. The Bethany
School was located at the Bethany Church on the Gravels Road between
Linville and Route 11. Each year the Linville District School Board
(later the Rockingham County School Board) paid the church for the
use of their building. The Bethany School was opened in 1919.
Teachers at Bethany were:
1919-24 (five sessions) Sallie Payne
1924-25 Treva Crider
1925-26 Arlene B. Phillips
1926-33 (seven sessions) Otis Loker
The Rockingham County School Board proposed the closing of Bethany
several times but were met with significant protest from the school's
patrons. When it finally became too difficult to maintain a legal
average of students, the patrons consented to the closing of Bethany
School after the 1932-33 school session.
