PENN LAIRD – Students from the Spotswood FFA Chapter attended the 89th National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis Indiana October 18th through the 21st. Among the chapter participants were the Virginia State Winning Senior Agriculture Mechanics and Technology Team, which competed this year representing the state on the National level.
Representing our Chapter and State in the Senior Agriculture Mechanics and Technology event were; Cody Atkins, Ricky Castro, Seth Diehl, and Bryce Phillips. This contest is comprised of events that allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations. Activities included in the event are a written exam, a team event, demonstration of problem-solving skills, and hands-on performance activities. Areas of emphasis include environmental and natural resource systems, machinery and equipment systems, structural systems, energy systems and electrical systems. Each team in the event has competed with other chapters in their state for the privilege of participating in the national event.
The Spotswood Senior Agriculture Mechanics and Technology team placed 14th overall and were honored with a team rating of Silver with individual ratings of: Ricky Castro earning a Bronze rating, Cody Atkins earning a Silver rating, Bryce Phillips earning a Gold rating and Seth Diehl earning Gold and placing as the 9th High Individual in the entire contest. The team also placed 3rd overall in the structural systems component earning a welder for their FFA Chapter donated by Lincoln Electric.
Other activities during the week include Trent Diehl, of the Spotswood FFA Chapter, earning his American FFA Degree. This is the highest degree and honor a FFA member might earn and showcases their dedication and commitment to the FFA and Agricultural Education.
