Ms. Swartzentruber was honored at the VCTM Awards dinner as part of their annual conference, which was held this year at James Madison University. As a fifth-grade teacher at Linville-Edom Elementary School, Ms. Swartzentruber has developed in her students an understanding of mathematics that is unparalleled. Maria was nominated for the award by Jenny Gibson, Coordinator of Mathematics for RCPS.
According to Ms. Gibson, “Ms. Swartzentruber makes mathematics fun, but at the same time, rigorous and meaningful. It is thrilling to watch her students think and reason through her rich Number Talks. More thrilling still is watching Ms. Swartzentruber’s adept questioning skills, guiding students through their individual difficulties, without ever explicitly dictating for them what they should do. Their understanding is evident in their exceptional achievement on state and local assessments, but even more evident in their genuine affection for mathematics.”
Maria has researched math anxiety in her graduate work, and has implemented strategies in her classroom to reduce anxiety among her students. The effect on her students’ disposition for mathematics and on their mathematical success is obvious to any observer. Congratulations, Ms. Swartzentruber!
