"East Rockingham High School senior Sydney Halleman had the unique opportunity this summer to participate in the NASA/VIMS Governor's School program through NASA. She worked at NASA's Langley Space Center. It consisted of Sydney boarding at Christopher Newport University for a month from June 21 through July 18. Activities included Sydney's helping create the sensors for the 2020 Mars Rover project. She participated with astronauts in creating the programs for the protection of the rover including sensors detecting heat, light, dark and cold. The concept was and is to create a sensor to preserve the rover from damages on the surface of Mars. She also worked on small CubeSats created to orbit the Earth as well. She worked directly with astronauts in creating these satellites. Only 12 students in the state of Virginia were accepted into the program. In all, only 4-10% of applicants were accepted into the program."
