The tour was provided by Mr. Al Jenkins, President of the Long’s Chapel Preservation Society; Ms. Robin Lyttle, Director of the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project; and Mr. Dale McAllister; Resident Historian of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society.
This visit is part of an ongoing initiative to include local history within the Social Studies curriculum of Rockingham County Public Schools. This not only makes history more relevant and personal, but it will also help students understand how the Valley fits into the overall history of Virginia. In addition to Ms. Simms, the curriculum will also feature other figures that impacted local history such as Elder John Kline, Governor Alexander Spotswood, General Turner Ashby, etc.
