The first year of the Criminal Justice program provides students with an introduction to the American criminal justice system with an emphasis on law enforcement. Other topics covered include the use of drugs in our society and an introduction to the court and correction systems.
In the second year instruction is given in the workings of the police, the courts, and of correctional facilities. This program articulates with the Criminal Justice program at Blue Ridge Community College and will enable the student to earn college credit in the AAS degree program.
Taking courses in Criminal Justice at MTC prior to college will give students advanced placement in the Administration of Justice Degree Programs at BRCC.
Graduates of the Criminal Justice Program are eligible for employment with sheriff's offices, with metropolitan and rural police departments, and with the Virginia State Police in various capacities.
Students can be employed as correctional officers in the Commonwealth of Virginia upon graduation from the program when they reach the age of 18; however, students must be 21 to apply for deputy, officer or trooper positions.
