Be a Santa to a Senior - United Way Project
Submitted by Brandy Strickler, Business and Information Technology Teacher, SHS
Five Rockingham County Public Schools (SHS, MMS, CRES, PKVES, and SRES) decorated over 300 gift bags that will be used to distribute presents to senior citizens in our community as a part of the United Way Volunteer Council December Project - Be a Santa to a Senior!.
Kim Floyd, art teacher at Spotswood High School, had her art classes and Blazer Block students complete approximately 60 large bags by cutting shapes that formed a snowman pattern. Brandy Strickler's Desktop Publishing class created banners advertising the project for the windows of the store that will host the Santa wrappings!
Pam Iwanicki, art teacher at Montevideo Middle School, had 8th graders decorate approximately 60 bags using paint and various holiday shapes.
Robin Goble, art teacher at Cub Run Elementary School, had 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders decorate approximately 60 bags in blue and silver, complete with attached jingle bells.
Al Marcowitz, art teacher at Peak View Elementary School, had 5th grade students decorate the bags in festive holiday scenes.
Edwina George, art teacher at South River Elementary School, completed approximately 60 bags using the different techniques. One first grade class made bags with snowmen on one side using The Elements of Art: line, shape, color to create our snowman. Students reviewed circles, triangles, rectangles, wavy lines, straight lines, and lines that cross for the snowman. They also used curve lines and patterns for the candy canes. A 3rd grade and a 4th grade class made colorful snowflakes to decorate the bags. The students were creating "Radial Symmetry found in Nature".
