MVES Teacher Wins Governor's Innovative Technology in Education Award
Obe Hostetter, 5th grade
teacher at Mountain View Elementary School, has been awarded
the Region V Governor's Innovative Technology in Education
Award for 2003. To select the winners of this year's award,
Governor Mark Warner appointed a Blue Ribbon Panel, with
input from the Office of the Secretary of Education, the
Office of the Secretary of Technology, the Department of
Education, and various high-tech businesses, to evaluate the
technology portfolios submitted by teachers across the
Commonwealth. The award was presented on May 30 at the
headquarters of America Online, Inc., a co-sponsor of the
award along with the Virginia Department of Education.
Presenting the award was Dr. Belle S. Wheelan, Secretary of
Education for the Commonwealth, and Dr. Terry Crane, Vice
President of Education, Families, and Workplace Products for
America Online, Inc. For being the Region V award winner,
Obe was presented with a check for $2,500. In his application, Obe wrote
that "Technology is a priceless resource for enhancing
curriculum. To be effective educators in the gaming
generation, we must learn how to engage students through
integrating technology into the classroom."

In addition to using
technology in his own classroom, Obe shares much of his work
with colleagues, including various Powerpoint files used by
students as they study SOLs. Obe also keeps the
MVES
website up-to-date and
informative. And, he maintains a class webpage for his
students and their parents; click here
to view it.

This is Obe's third year of teaching; all years have been at Mountain View Elementary School where he also serves as the school's Computer Troubleshooter. He is a graduate of Eastern Mennonite University.
