Two RCPS Teachers Win National NASDAQ Awards

Lynne Stover and Ryan Ritter Named Southeastern Regional Semifinalists in Economic Education Awards

Two teachers from Rockingham County have won awards sponsored by NASDAQ, the national stock exchange originated by the National Association of Securities Dealers. Projects by Lynne F. Stover of Wilbur S. Pence Middle School and Ryan Ritter of Broadway High School were named southeastern regional semifinalists with $1000 awards.

"That means that Rockingham County won two of the five places in the southeast region," said Martha Hopkins of the James Madison University Center for Economic Education, which coordinates the competition locally.

NASDAQ's southeast region includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia and West Virginia.

Stover and Ritter's projects were among 16 that were recognized nationwide.

In Stover's unit, "Magic: Linking Literature to Economics," students learned to apply economic concepts through classic and popular works of fantasy.

Ritter's project, "That'$ Life," taught high school special education students personal finance skills through simulations of common tasks in earning and handling money.

The NASDAQ National Teaching Awards are designed to advance economic literacy "by recognizing middle school and high school teachers who are helping students to think, make sound, informed decisions, and function well in the economy," according to a NASDAQ news release.
