Kim Dean, who teaches United States History at Turner Ashby High School, was recognized by the local Massanutton Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) as the High School American History Teacher of the Year. During the luncheon on March 12th, Kim eloquently described her philosophy of education and the importance of teaching American History to today's students. The audience, a group of history advocates, was on the edge of their seats rapt in thought, mesmerized by Mrs. Dean's stories and descriptions of her classes. You could hardly hear a breath. Members expressed their appreciation for the work that Kim does and felt reassured that the study of American History is alive and well in Rockingham County Schools.

Susan Melendez, who teaches 5th grade United States History at Mountain View Elementary School, was chosen as the first ever Elementary School American History Teacher of the Year by the Massanutton Chapter. They created this award when they learned of the extensive involvement of Mrs. Melendez and her student in the annual reenactment of Indian engagement and the burning of Fort Seybert in West Virginia. Students from Susan's classes and former students come and return to this event. They dress in period costumes, assume the character of historical figures, and live with the lack of creature comforts of that time in history. Mrs. Melendez's enthusiastic description of the many ways she involves students in learning about history was warmly received by the Chapter. They became so engaged that they asked questions and wanted to know more about the history of Fort Seybert.
