OINK If You Love Reading at Elkton Elementary!

Students at EES reached their goal of reading 10,000 books in two weeks to get to throw mud pies at our principal, Mr. Powell. Our theme was "Oink, If You Love Reading!" We had three teams: the Valenswines, the Sport Hogs, and the Thing-a-Ma-Pigs who competed against each other to see who would get to toss the mud pies (chocolate pudding).

At the end of the two-week period, we let everyone HAM it up in the gym as Mr. Failes and Mr. Painter led pig-themed relay races for the top readers in each class while their classmates cheered them on. Everyone had fun and enjoyed their accomplishment of reading so many books. Many students dressed up and waved banners to encourage their teams.

Pig Out on Books and READ at Peak View

Everyone at our school made sure to Pig Out on Books and READ! Students also brought in change for several villages in Nicaragua in order for them to have books. We brought in over $1,000! Another highlight of the month was the visit from Farmer Minor and his reading pig, Daisy. On Friday, March 24 the school dressed up as farmers and pigs and pigged out on books and pig stories.

10 classes had 100% of their students meet their reading goals and they pigged out on pizza. Since we also learned about "piggy" banks and the importance of saving, every student who meet the reading goal was also given chocolate coins to remind them of the sweet reward of reading and of the money we raised to help other children get books.

River Bend Pigs Out on Reading!!!!

The students at River Bend read a phenomenal number of minutes. Not only did the students meet the goal of 75,000, they read a total of 130,000 minutes, 55, 000 minutes above the goal.

Fill our school with pigs & go for the Golden Pig!

Throughout the month, each child had a chance to earn a Pink, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Pig when they reached their individual goals. Die-cut pigs were provided for each student to write their name. The pigs were displayed in the halls to celebrate how much we love pigging out on books.

Welcome Farmer Minor and Daisy

Farmer Minor and Daisy pig received a very warm welcome by all of students, dressed as farmers. Since the students meet and surpassed the reading goal, Mrs. Nickel kissed Daisy the potbellied pig. There were also three teachers nominated to kiss Daisy: Mr. Kober (5th grade teacher), Mrs. Churchill (3rd grade teacher), and Mrs. Zeigler (1st grade teacher).
