RCPS Honored by United Way

The teachers, staff and students of the Rockingham County Public School division were honored this week at the United Way’s Appreciation Breakfast to celebrate the 2009-10 campaign.

UWRCPS was awarded the “Inspiring Community Award” for the 2009 Community Impact Campaign. The division campaign was cited for “creating opportunities and inspiring hope for a better tomorrow.” The theme of the RCPS campaign was “The Twelve Days of United Way” and featured each school’s and center’s information shared by the UW coordinator.

Several members of the United Way Coordinators team represented the division at the May 26 appreciation event. Pictured at left are Don Rhodes, Janet Wendelken, Maria Blair, Steve Walk, Brandy Strickler, Amy Harris, Robin Garrett, and Dr. Carol Fenn.

The United Way Campaign was co-chaired by Dr. Fenn and Tracy Jones of WHVS-TV3. Betsy Hay, executive director of UW, reported that the campaign raised funds toward the $1.4 million and funded many of the community partner programs with their leadership. Hay indicated that were 184 businesses and organizations that participated in the campaign with 30 of them being involved for the first time. Fifty businesses or organizations were cited for raising 30 percent over what each raised last year.

All of the 23 schools and centers of Rockingham County Public Schools worked together, raising $38,959.89, which is a 34 percent increase over 2008-09.

Congratulations to RCPS and all of the United Way coordinators!
