Reading Strategies

Before starting a new text, good readers...

  1. Establish Purpose
What are you doing? Reading for fun? Reading to learn something? Reading to find something?
  2. Analyze the Reading Task
You will need to read differently when you are reading for pleasure than you will if you are reading to discover new Science terms or find answers to Social Studies questions.
  3. Activate Prior Knowledge
What do you already know about this topic or this story? If you think about what you already know, reading the new stuff will be much smoother.
  4. Preview the Text
Look over the words and phrases in the book or story you are about to read. What are you going to do if you come across words that you are unsure of? Hmm....
  5. Consider Your Own Interests
Do you have to read this text?
    - If you are interested and you have to read it, you are lucky!!
    - If you are not particularly interested but you have to read it, then you are going to have to approach it like a job - it has to be done, you might as well have a good attitude and get it over with!
    - If you are not interested and you do not have to read it, choose something else!

DURING READING...
While good readers are reading...

  1. Determine Important vs. Unimportant

Every single word that you read is not going to be the most important. SO, try to figure out what is important and what is unimportant in a text.
    Example:
Question: What was Benjamin Franklin's role in our forming of our country?
Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the tenth son of a soap maker named Josiah. Franklin helped write the Declaration of Independence. When Benjamin Franklin died, 20,000 people attended his funeral.
  2. Determine Important vs. Interesting
Just like every single word that you read is not the most important, it might also not be the most interesting. SO, try to figure out what is important and what is interesting in a text. The interesting facts keep you wanting to read while the important facts are what you need to know for tests and assignments.
    Example:
Question: Where was Thomas Jefferson's home?
Thomas Jefferson resided in Charlottesville, Virginia at his home named Monticello. While in France, Jefferson came across a treat called ice cream and broug
Thomas Jefferson resided in Charlottesville, Virginia at his home named Monticello. While in France, Jefferson came across a treat called ice cream and brought it back to the United States. He often served ice cream to guests at his home.
  3. Analyze Text Structure
    What is the text doing?
Stories have beginning, middle, and end.
Text books are filled with facts - usually vocabulary and important facts are in BOLD
Persuasive essays have introduction, reasons, and conclusions.
How to papers explain the steps to complete a process.
  4. Monitor Your Progress
If you run into trouble understanding, STOP! Don't plow through! Stop, look up words, reread the passage, ask questions....try to get clear before moving on!

AND FINALLY....

Actively
Construct
Meaning
Summarize
Question
Clarify
Predict
