Executive Summary

The Educational Technology Plan for Rockingham County Public Schools is more comprehensive than former RCPS Technology Plans and is formatted differently. But it does not represent a change of direction for technology in Rockingham County. Throughout this plan, the words Continue to are used because those who have contributed to this plan agree that RCPS has made significant progress in all areas of technology, as indicated in the Duration section which lists signficant accomplishments since 1995 and plans through 2011. The contributors to this plan agree that RCPS is on the right technology track but we constantly need to be upgrading and improving our technologies, our training for staff, students, and educators, and our support for users.

The 2007-10 focus for improvement has been on these items:

Aligning the RCPS Technology Plan to the 2003-2009 Educational Technology Plan for Virginia

• All Goals and Targets are listed from the Educational Technology Plan for Virginia from its sections on Integration, Professional Development, Connectivity, Educational Applications, and Accountability. Under each target, the current status of this target in RCPS is described. Also under each target, a action plan for RCPS is stated for the accomplishment of the target.

Providing the technology and training for educators to integrate technology into the teaching/learning process

• Upgrading existing classroom and lab technologies
• Continuing to add those technologies which support technology integration by equipping additional rooms for video/RGB projection, mobile projection-equipped carts, wireless laptops, digital cameras, video conferencing, interactive whiteboards, document cameras, digital camcorders, etc.
• Continuing to provide high quality, convenient, and free/inexpensive staff development for educators
• Lowering the student-computer ratio from its current status of 2.5-1 for the Division to the state's goals of 1-1 for grades 3-12 and 3-1 for grades K-2.

Providing support to all users

• Providing high quality, readily available technical support for educators including building-level support staff
• Providing, via Instructional Technology Resource Teachers, regular and highly skilled assistance to teachers and students for technology integration including one-on-one assistance and group inservices.

Providing infrastructure upgrades

• Improving WAN bandwidth at all schools to a minimum of 10 MBPS speeds
• Upgrading LAN hardware at all schools
