Newtown (East Elkton) Colored School

The Newtown School was located east of Elkton on the road leading to Fox Mountain. The exact date of the construction of the school is unknown but it is not indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The first known teacher at Newtown was Jennie Lovett who taught at Newtown in 1882-83. Presumably the first one-room building was constructed at this time. In 1911, a second room was added to the school and for several years, Newtown was a two teacher school. Apparently the number of teachers varied as in some years only one teacher is indicated. During the teens and 1920s, funds for black school renovation and construction were provided through the Rosenwald Fund, a special grant to improve black education. The Rosenwald fund was used to construct a new school in 1921. For many years, black residents in the Elkton area referred to the school as the East Elkton Rosenwald school.

L. A. Hensley was contracted by the Stonewall District School Board to construct a new two-room school. The Newtown School served until 1965 when it was closed and Rockingham County Schools were integrated.
