Mountain View Elementary School opened in the fall of 2000 on property located on Route 33 west of Harrisonburg near the Belmont subdivision. The Mountain View school drew its population from Mt. Clinton Elementary School, which was closed, and also drew students from Ottobine Elementary School and Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

Selah Sprinkel, who had previously served as principal at Port Republic and Mt. Clinton, was appointed as the first principal at Mountain View. She served as principal until 2008. Debi Rhodes is the current principal.
