The Maple Spring School, located east of Elkton adjoining the
Shenandoah National Park, was constructed about 1882 next to the
Hensley church. There is little information available about this
early school. Some of the teachers at this school were Ellen V.
Bishop (1884-85), Berta P. Thumond (1885-86), G. H. Shiflett
(1887-88), E. W. Shepp (1890-91), Serena Eaton (1892-93), Nora B.
Leap (1893-94), Miss Jessie Shipp (1908-09), Mr. Richard L. Brill
(1909-10), Laura Pence (1912-13) and Lelia Naylor (1914-15).
According to his year end report in 1910, Mr. Brill indicated that
the school was unpainted and in very poor condition. The old building
was not used during the 1915-16 and 1916-17 school sessions and the
Maple Spring school was conducted at the Hensley Church as reported
by teachers Laura Cline (1915-1916) and Marvin R. Reynolds
(1916-1917). Presumably the old school became too decrepit to use or
perhaps may have burned. The new Maple Spring School was built in
1917 and the teacher for the 1917-18 school session was Carrie Pence.
Students listed during the first session at the new school were:
Albert Breeden
