The Fairview School in Central District was one of several schools in Rockingham County with the same name. The Fairview (Central) school was located about two miles east of Harrisonburg a short distance from the Rockingham Turnpike (now U. S. 33). The school is shown in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The land for the school was deeded to the Central District School Board in June of 1877. The original one-room school operated at this location until 1920 when land was purchased nearer the Rockingham Turnpike and the old school was moved and reconstructed in 1920 by a Mr. Earman at a cost of $1500. A second room was added to the school at this time. The land for this newly reconstructed school was deeded to the Central District School Board by Fruit Ridge Orchards, Inc. on November 18, 1919. The new school was located on the opposite side of the road from the Spotswood County Club. The Fairview School continued in operation until 1938, sometimes as a one-teacher school and, for several years, the school population justified a second teacher. After the school was closed in 1935, the building was used as an apple storage shed by Fruit Ridge Orchards.
