The Whitmer School was built in 1885 on the west side of the road
from Broadway to Mathias (currently Route 259). The Whitmer School
was apparently a successor to the Brake School which was located
further north and on the opposite side of the road. The land for the
Whitmer School was deeded to the Plains District School Board by Adam
Whitmore and wife on December 10, 1885. Presumably the school opened
for the first time during the 1885-86 school year. Superintendent
George Hulvey, in his account of a school visit to northwestern
Rockingham County in November of 1886, noted that Miss Parma Fulk was
teaching at the Whitmer School. Other early teachers are not
known.
