Timber Ridge School (Ashby)

The Timber Ridge school in Ashby District was one of the oldest schools in the county, predating the public school system. The original Timber Ridge school was built about 1860 and was located a short distance east of the Keezletown Road in the south central part of Ashby District. The building was a one-room frame schoolhouse. The school was incorporated into the county school system in 1872. In 1884 a new roof was added to the old schoolhouse. By 1896 the one-room school was in need of replacement and property was purchased from M. J. Henkel and wife on November 27, 1896. A new two-room school was built at the new location. This new school also went by the name of "Meyerhoeffer's school" because of its location near the Meyerhoeffer's post office. The location of the Timber Ridge school is noted in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County and indicated at Timber Ridge School # 17. The only known teacher at the old school was Joseph Pence, who began his teaching career in 1887 at the old Timber Ridge school and continued teaching at that school and the new school until he retired in 1913. He apparently took one year off from teaching as he is not included on the teacher's list for the 1910-11 school session. In 1903, the Landsdale school, located further south on the Keezletown Road, was moved to the Timber Ridge site and added to make two additional rooms for Timber Ridge. In 1929, a new brick building was built at Timber Ridge. The school also included a gymnasium. This school continued to serve the community until 1951 when the Timber Ridge school was closed.
