Tenth Legion School

The earliest school at Tenth Legion was a one-room structure built in 1878 at a site to the south of Bethlehem Church on the Valley Pike. This one-room school served until 1888 when student enrollment justified an addition to the school and that two teachers be employed. By the session of 1905-06 an additional teacher was added and by the 1911-12 school session, Tenth Legion became a four-teacher school. The school remained a four-teacher school with the principal as the teacher of the two year high school program until the high school was discontinued in 1942.

During the school year 1920-21 the citizens of the Tenth Legion community realized the need for a new school building to replace the now-aging 1888 structure which housed 118 pupils in four rooms. Mr. R. B. Wickes, who later taught at New Market for many years, was the principal and teacher of the high school department. Land for the new school was deeded to the Plains District school trustees by Jackson Martz on May 20, 1921 and construction of the new school was completed late in the 1921-22 school session. Tenth Legion continued as an elementary and two-year high school until 1942 when the high school program was discontinued and students transported to Broadway High School. During the 1950s the school became very overcrowded and the auditorium on the lower floor was converted to two classrooms. During the late 1950s there was a proposal to add a three-room addition to Tenth Legion but it was later decided to build an Intermediate school at Broadway to provide for the seventh and eighth grades. The Tenth Legion School was closed in 1972 and consolidated into the new Plains Elementary School at Timberville. Teachers known to have taught at Tenth Legion are:
