The Stonewall school was located in the western part of Ashby District south of Briery Branch and near the Augusta County line. The original building was constructed about 1860 and preceded the public school system. It was a small (16 x 18) frame building with yellow pine weatherboarding. The school was later incorporated into the county school system. Early teachers at Stonewall include William Blakemore, Maggie Beard, John Fultz, and David R. Blakemore. In 1882, a new one-room building was constructed a little further north toward Briery Branch. This building is indicated as Stonewall School in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. In 1907, the closed Briery Branch Colored School was moved to Stonewall and attached to make a second room. Teachers at the two-room school were B. G. Soule and Della Ritchie. The Stonewall school was closed in 1908 and consolidated into the new Briery Branch school.
