The first school at Spring Creek was built in 1870 and was located
on the public road leading from the north to the village of Spring
Creek and about 1/2 mile from the village. The school was
incorporated into the public school system when it was established in
1872. This building was built of concrete and was 22 x 24 in size. In
1880 an additional room, of frame construction, was built to the rear
of the original building and was 22 x 27 in size. The school was
located on one acre of land. When this additional room was built,
Spring Creek was considered a graded school, under the direction of
M.D. Weaver. In 1883, the school was no longer listed as a graded
school. Teachers at the school through the 1880's and 1890's were Mr.
Weaver and John D. Miller. By 1885, the community felt a need to have
a school in the village itself and constructed a new one room school.
The size of the school was 22 x 30 and had a bell and belfry. By 1903
the community had outgrown the one-room school and built a 24 x 40
four room building. The building had two rooms located on the upper
floor and two rooms located on the lower floor. The vestibules were
located at the entrance to the lower floor with a belfry located over
the vestibules. The foundation for the building was donated by the
patrons and was constructed at a cost of $1366. The High School Act
of 1902 created special funding available from the state to provide
secondary education (high school) in the school divisions of the
state. Between 1903 and 1912, many communities in Rockingham worked
to provide this advanced schooling and many buildings were
constructed to provide such a program. In 1909, a new school was
built at Spring Creek to provide publicly supported high school
education for the community. A large building, using a plan similar
to the Briary Branch and Victory Hill buildings, which has been
constructed in 1907 and 1908, served as a school for the Spring Creek
community until it was closed in 1945.
