The Souder School was located on Crab Run a short distance north of Dovesville (Bergton). The one-room school was opened for the 1882-83 school session. In the Plains District School Board minutes of August 22, 1882 it states "that an appropriation of $175 be made for a new school at Souder's". Superintendent George Hulvey made note of the school in an article concerning a visit to the schools of northwest Rockingham in the fall of 1886. Mr. G. W. Cullers was teaching at the Souder school. The Souder school is designated as School#31 in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. Apparently the land for the school was not deeded to the Plains District School Board until 1897. Deed records indicate that on December 30, 1897, the land was deeded to the board by Levi and Etta Souder along with Wade Souder. The transaction was made for $1 with the provision that" when not used for the purpose of a school that lot would revert back to its original owners." The Souder school was closed in 1913 when the new Dovesville (Bergton) school was built. Teachers known to have taught at the Souder school are:
1886-87 G. W. Cullers
1908-09 Susie E. Maupin
1910-11 Grant Souder
1911-13 (two sessions) S. Loy Moyers
