Sandy Bottom School


The Sandy Bottom School was one of three one-room schools in the Simmons Gap area east of Elkton and south of Swift Run. (See also Beldor and Roadside Schools). Sandy Bottom opened in 1887 and was one of the last one-room schools to close in the eastern part of Rockingham County, closing upon the completion of Elkton High School in 1958. The Sandy Bottom School was located along Mill Creek on the first road leading east from the Simmon's Gap Road.
