Rocky Bar (Island Ford) School

The Island Ford School was located near the Yancey station and post office south of Elkton on the east side of the Shenandoah River. The date of construction of the Island Ford school is unknown but it is shown but not named in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The original school at Island Ford was a one-room frame structure. The school was indicated on school records as the Island Ford school but was also referred to in some Stonewall District school board minutes as the Rocky Bar School. When a new two-room school was built in 1917, the school became known on school records as the Rocky Bar school. The Rocky Bar school closed in 1951.
