Riverbank School

The Riverbank School was one of the earliest schools in Rockingham County. The school was located near Riverbank Mill on the east side of the Shenandoah River east of McGaheysville. The exact date of construction is unknown but records indicate that A. C. Kimler, who later distinguished himself as one of the leading early educators in the county, taught at Riverbank from 1878-1881. In 1881 he moved to the Oak Hill Academy at McGaheysville and developed one of the strongest educational programs in Rockingham County. The school is shown in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. The Riverbank School closed in 1896.
