Pleasant Valley (Spaders) Colored School

 

The Pleasant Valley Colored School was located about 1 1/2 miles east of the Pleasant Valley depot near Spaders church in Ashby District. The school was a one-room frame building built in 1885. The school is indicated in Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County. Land for the school was deeded to the Ashby District School Board by W. J. Sandy and wife on December 20, 1884. Early teachers at the Pleasant Valley Colored School are unknown. The Pleasant Valley Colored School was closed in 1924-25 after several years of difficulty maintaining a legal average population.
