Pleasant Hill School

 

Pleasant Hill school was located at the south edge of Harrisonburg at the intersection of the Warm Springs Turnpike (Route 42) and the Pleasant Hill Road. The first school building was built by the patrons in 1870. It was a one-room frame building used for community meetings. In 1875 the patrons decided to turn it into a school building and Pleasant Hill school was opened. In 1890, the school system added a second room to the building. In 1907 and third room, constructed of brick, was added to the two-room structure. By 1916, the school had outgrown its facilities and land on the opposite side of Pleasant Hill Road was purchased from John R. Garber (deed dated March 14, 1916). A substantial brick building was constructed and ready for occupancy by the fall of 1917. This school remained in operation until it was consolidated into the new Pleasant Valley school in the fall of 1963.The Pleasant Hill school was used as a training school for Madison College for many years and several of the staff members at Pleasant Hill were also considered faculty members at Madison College. The Pleasant Hill Building is now used by Dick Heatwole as the Old School Auction House.
