Penn Laird School

The Penn Laird school was located on the Rockingham Turnpike (U. S. 33) in the eastern part of Central District. The Penn Laird school was moved to a site near the C & W Railroad in 1910. The original building was a one-room building ( a vacant house) placed at Penn Laird to respond to the educational needs of a growing community. Land for the school was deeded to the Central District School Board in 1910 by T. P. Yager and wife. The only other school near Penn Laird had been the Cross Roads school, which was located at the intersection of the Rockingham Turnpike (U. S. 33) and the road to Keezletown (now Indian Trail Road). This school was closed when the Penn Laird School was opened. With the coming of the railroad, Penn Laird became a growing community. By the fall of 1912, it was necessary to add a second room to the Penn Laird school. The school continued as a two-teacher school until 1933, when a drop in school population reduced the school to a one-teacher school. The Penn Laird school was closed in 1936.
