The North River School was built in 1872 a short distance north of
the the Mount Crawford Depot which was located east of Mt. Crawford
in Ashby District. The school was a one-room building, noted on
Lake's 1885 Atlas of Rockingham County as Sorghumville School #29.
The school was built at a cost of $400. The North River School
operated until 1918, when the school was closed and the students
transported to the new school at Mt. Crawford. Teachers known to have
