New Erection School

The first New Erection school was a log structure built on the land belonging to Peter and Anna Wenger across the road from Cook's Creek Church. The location was on what is presently Mt. Clinton Pike about 4 miles west of Harrisonburg. A new frame school building was constructed in 1875. Land for the school was deeded to the Central District school trustees in two parcels: on January 1, 1877 by Peter and Anna Wenger and a second parcel was deeded on August 16, 1886 by the Wengers. In 1906, a cement two-room building was constructed at the same location. In 1933, the school population had dropped to the point that the upper grades were sent to Dale Enterprize and New Erection became a one-teacher school. The New Erection school served its community until it was destroyed by fire on January 25, 1935. The fire was apparently caused by an overheated stove. Students were then transported to Mt. Clinton and Dale Enterprise. Teachers known to have taught at New Erection were:
